Maryam Shekarchian
Iranian Glass
Trained in architecture and interior design, Sherkarchian fuses structural precision with creative innovation in her work. Building on the ancient Iranian tradition of mirror art—found in historic sites like Golestan Palace—she reinterprets the craft through vibrant colours and contemporary designs.
Historically, mirrors were transported from Venice to Iran along the Silk Road in the 16th century, often arriving shattered after the journey. Sherkarchian pays homage to her ancestors, who transformed these fragments into ‘Renaissance’ Iranian mirror artworks, creations that still grace the interiors and exteriors of historic Iranian buildings.
Committed to capturing the symbolic and poetic essence of mirror art, Sherkarchian draws conceptual inspiration from legendary Middle Eastern figures. She honours the words of the 13th-century Persian poet Saadi Shirazi, who observed, “The world is a mirror; what you show, you will see.”
