Gulay Semercioglu
Woven wire
From a distance, the works of Gülay Semercioglu appear to be finely executed abstract paintings. However, on closer inspection the viewer can see the thin aluminium wire that fills the canvas, creating lush forms and fields.
Semercioglu draws inspiration from her upbringing among a group of Anatolian carpet makers, from whom she learned to knit at the age of five.
In an ode to the Turkish carpet motifs of her childhood, she weaves reflective metallic wires into a dense mesh, creating intricate geometric and abstract designs that explore structures of life, nature and architecture.
