Geoffrey Preston

About

British artist Geoffrey Preston is a world-leading plaster sculptor. Trained as a stone mason, carver, and restorer at Hornsey College of Art, Preston founded his plaster studio over two decades ago. His work is shown in prestigious collections worldwide.

Sculpted plaster

Preston is widely regarded as a contemporary master of plaster relief – a rare, highly specialist art form. In a modern take on traditional methods, the designs are first modelled in clay before being cast in plaster.

Skilfully using the stucco technique, Preston also models plaster directly onto the finished piece to create unique forms. The designs illustrate how an ingenious use of depth can offer great versatility: the effect ranges from a subtle addition of texture, to dramatic and highly sculptural forms.

Drawing on motifs from nature – such as flora, fauna and the sea – as well as abstract architectural patterns, each design is created with great sensitivity to the character of the interior.
